Executive Summary
Project A, listed on TrustMRR under that name and identifiable from listing metadata as Faladdin, works because it did not create demand. It automated a payment that already existed. Turkish coffee fortune telling is a centuries-old ritual where a human reader interprets coffee grounds for money. The company first built a marketplace that connected human tellers to customers, then replaced the teller entirely with templated, AI-assembled readings. The founder described the move directly: a self-driving Uber, remove the driver, keep the vehicle.1 That single substitution collapsed the marginal cost of a reading from a human's 15 minutes to approximately zero, while the customer's willingness to pay and emotional attachment stayed intact. Everything else, the ad-supported free tier, the $5.99 weekly subscriptions, the astrology re-skin for Western markets, is monetization layered on top of that one compression.
The evidence is unusually concrete for a consumer app. Press coverage from 2019 and 2020 documents 15M then 20M+ downloads, roughly 1M readings per day, 5M monthly actives, and about $5M annual revenue with 60% from ads.12 The company site now claims 50M downloads.3 Local TrustMRR charge data, tracked via RevenueCat since March 28, 2026, shows $282,971 in gross charges over 72 days (March 30 to June 9, 2026) across 55,463 charges, an average charge of $5.10, with daily gross rising 71% from the first half of the window to the second. That history is gross charge volume, not audited recurring revenue.4 The owner has the asset listed for sale at $5M, roughly 5.1x the listing's last-30-day revenue figure, with ad revenue explicitly excluded from the tracked numbers.5
The operating pattern a founder can copy this week is not "build an astrology app." It is: find a ritual people already pay humans for, intermediate it with a marketplace to learn the format, then automate the supply side once you know exactly what the output artifact must look like.
| Thesis component | Evidence | Confidence | Operator implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demand pre-existed; no category creation needed | Fortune telling is an established paid service in Turkey; tellers earned above minimum wage; dedicated fortune-telling cafes operate in Istanbul (Rest of World, 2020) | Verified (third-party reporting) | Automate existing spend before inventing new spend |
| Marketplace-first sequencing taught the output format | Binnaz app: human tellers scaled 1 to ~1,000 between 2010 and 2019, 2M+ downloads, before Faladdin launched in Jan 2017 | Verified (founder interviews, two outlets) | Run the manual version until you can spec the artifact, then automate |
| Automation collapsed marginal cost while price held | Readings assembled from ~6,000 pre-written fortune fragments by ~30 contributors, later fed to OpenAI models; ~1M readings/day served | Self-reported (founder, in third-party press) | Template plus light personalization beats full generation for cost control |
| Micro-priced, high-frequency monetization | 55,463 charges in 72 days at $5.10 average; weekly plans priced at $5.99 and $9.99 on the App Store | Local TrustMRR data plus verified App Store pricing | Price at impulse level; let frequency, not ticket size, build revenue |
| Localization as translation of format, not features | Coffee-cup symbolism rewritten as astrology for the US; "tree in your cup" becomes "Mercury retrograde" (founder, 2020) | Self-reported | Port the ritual's grammar, not its surface, when crossing cultures |
| Business still works in 2026 | Gross daily charges rose from ~$2,900/day to ~$4,960/day across the 72-day window; 10,052 active subscriptions shown on the listing | Local TrustMRR data | The pattern survived eight years and an AI hype cycle |
