Executive Summary
Brevilabs works because it executed a marketplace-distribution arbitrage in the correct order. The founder shipped a free, open-source AI chat plugin into Obsidian's official community plugin directory in May 2023, let the marketplace compound installs to 1.45 million downloads at zero acquisition cost, and only then, in late 2024, attached a paid backend (Copilot Plus) that sells the one thing the open-source plugin cannot give away: bundled model access, embeddings, and agent infrastructure with no API-key setup. The free plugin is the distribution machine; the subscription sells the removal of the plugin's own setup friction. The result, per local TrustMRR Stripe data: $776,191 in gross charge volume across 16,474 charges between 2025-01-27 and 2026-06-09, with charge counts growing from 819 per month in February 2025 to roughly 1,150 to 1,220 per month through 2026.
The mechanism is causal, not incidental. Obsidian attracts exactly the buyer who refuses to move notes into a cloud AI tool: local-first, file-over-app, privacy-anxious knowledge workers. That preference disqualifies Notion AI, Mem, and NotebookLM, the best-funded competitors, on ideology before features are compared. Brevilabs sells AI that comes to the notes instead of notes that go to the AI, and prices the convenience tier at $14.99 per month with a $349.99 lifetime-self-host anchor for the most committed cohort.
| Thesis component | Evidence | Confidence | Operator implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plugin on official marketplace = near-zero CAC distribution | Released in Obsidian directory 2023-05-04 [^2]; 1,455,034 downloads [^3] | Verified | Ship free into a marketplace your ICP already browses before building billing |
| 21-month free period built the monetizable base | Repo created 2023-03-31; first Stripe charge 2025-01-27 (TrustMRR raw) | Verified | Sequence: distribution first, monetization second, not parallel |
| Paid tier sells convenience, not capability | Pricing page: free is BYOK with all open-source features; Plus adds built-in models, agents, file types [^4] | Verified | Monetize the setup friction your free product creates |
| Privacy ideology of the ICP blocks cloud incumbents | Obsidian positioning, product copy "local storage, no uploading your index" | Verified copy, inferred mechanism | Pick an ICP whose values disqualify the giants |
| High-ticket early cohort funded the launch | Feb 2025: $81.4k gross volume, $99.34 average charge vs $47 overall (TrustMRR raw) | Local TrustMRR data | Open paid access with a lifetime-style anchor to harvest superfans first |
| Community award is the trust flywheel | Obsidian 2024 Gems of the Year winner, Language models category [^5] | Verified | Win the platform's own awards; it is the cheapest credibility available |
